Where Leadership Really Starts
I can tell a lot about how someone leads by asking who they were at ten years old.
Not their resume. Not the title on their door. The kid version of them. The one who learned to read a room before they could read a paragraph, or the one who figured out early that being useful was the fastest way to feel safe. That kid is still in the room during every hard conversation, every budget fight, every tough call. We just stop noticing.
Leadership gets talked about like it lives in strategies, titles, and accolades. I think it lives somewhere older than that. It lives in the experiences we carry, especially the ones from our earliest days. Roots to Results grew out of that belief. To understand how someone leads, you have to dig into the roots that fed them.
My own leadership journey
Before I get into why I started this, I want to put myself in the story, because I am not standing outside of it.
Growing up, I learned to find my way through complicated family dynamics. My family had its highs and lows like a lot of families do, and I got good at reading the emotional undercurrent in a room. I could feel a shift in someone's mood before they said a word. That skill became one of my greatest strengths. It also became a trap. For a long time I struggled to set boundaries, and I carried perfectionism around like it was a virtue.
I also had to work my way out of codependency. I had to learn that strong leadership does not mean handing over your own needs every time someone else has one. Those early experiences pushed me toward emotional intelligence and resilience, and I lean on both every day now. They shape how I show up as a consultant, and they shape the mission underneath the work: helping other people move through their own leadership growth with a little more honesty.
Why I started Roots to Results
I have spent years in organizational development and leadership consulting, and I keep seeing the same thing. A leader's personal story shapes how they lead, whether they know it or not. Resilience born from hardship. A generous, patient style built inside a chaotic household. There is a thread running from our personal history to our professional life, and most of us never trace it.
My own path is proof of it. So I wanted to build a space where leaders could sit with their stories and say the real thing out loud, including the messy, formative parts we usually keep off the record. Roots to Results is that space. Leaders pull back the curtain and talk about how their childhood, their family, and their hardest personal moments shaped the leaders they turned into.
What I hope this does
The goal is simple. I want us to understand leadership better by telling the stories that usually go untold.
Through honest conversations, I want to surface the personal narratives that show how early life shapes both a leader's strengths and their growing edges. I want to connect the personal and the professional, and show how family dynamics and childhood experiences follow us into how we decide, how we recover, and how we read other people. And I want these conversations to spark reflection, for the guests and for you listening. Leadership is a long walk, and we all have something to learn from how other people have walked it, especially through the hard parts.
When we tell these stories, leadership starts to look more human. Nobody leads well by being perfect. We lead out of the specific lives we have lived, the struggles and the wins and all the ordinary stuff in between. If this podcast moves one person to look honestly at their own leadership story, or to keep growing through something difficult, that is a win to me.
A journey of reflection and growth
Here is what I keep coming back to. We do not become leaders in isolation. We bring our whole selves to the work, our histories and our family patterns and our emotional habits, and all of it shows up in how we lead. When we understand the roots, we understand the results.
My own leadership grew straight out of my early experiences, so this project is personal. I would love for you to come along. Whether you lead now, you are working toward it, or you are just curious about the stories behind the people who lead, Roots to Results has something for you. I am excited to share these conversations, and I hope they stir something in your own leadership.
Listen in. And remember, leadership starts with the roots we grow from.
